The reason we are seeing a lot of new Layer 2 networks popping up is because of Blockchain Trilema. The blockchain trilemma refers to a problem where an ecosystem can only focus on 2 critical components of the blockchain world out of 3, these three aspects are Decentralization, Security, and scalability. Since a blockchain network can only focus on 2 components and sacrifice the other one, it allows another blockchain to build around components sacrificed by the existing blockchain.
For Example, the Ethereum Foundation wants to maintain its focus on security and decentralization by sacrificing scalability. Thus, solutions like sidechains, layer 2 networks, and optimistic rollups were invoked in this race to scale Ethereum.
The EVM can only handle a throughput of 15 transactions per second and thus quickly gets overwhelmed, especially with the rapid growth in network adoption. This has led to slow transaction speed, high gas fees, and, hence, less inclusivity in the web3 ecosystem. Hence an opportunity for a Layer 2 network to come and build around these pain points.
This is where zkEVM comes into action. zkEVMs are imagined as a scaling solution "holy grail" and potentially an answer to the blockchain trilemma. Let’s explore astar zkEVM.
What is Astar zkEVM?
In September 2023, Astar Network announced the development of an Ethereum Layer 2 “Astar zkEVM Powered by Polygon”.
According to Astar, Astar zkEVM is an Ethereum Layer-2 scaling solution leveraging Polygon's Chain Development Kit and cutting-edge zero-knowledge cryptography to enable off-chain transaction execution, with finality and security guarantees provided by Ethereum. Astar zkEVM is a ZK scaling solution for Ethereum that offers an EVM-equivalent environment on which existing EVM smart contracts, developer tools, and wallets can work seamlessly.
Astar zkEVM leverages the power of zero-knowledge proofs to reduce transaction costs and increase throughput while inheriting the security of Ethereum.

Astar zkEVM is an L2 scaling solution.
It is leveraging Polygon’s Chain Development Kit.
It aims to lower the transaction costs and increase throughput.
It aims to solve the Blockchain Trilemma.

Astar zkEVM Growth:
A variety of web3 projects and service providers are already using the Astar zkEVM, including leading Polygon DEX Quickswap, NFT marketplace Rarible, interoperability protocol LayerZero, The Graph, Safe Core SDK, Gelato Relayer, Web3Auth, SubQuery, Pyth, Safe, Startale, Band Protocol, Subsquid and Acurast.
Astar zkEVM launched their test net on 23rd October 2023, named Zkatana. So far the growth is not impressive as the number of users who have used the testnet is not commandable.

What is Yoki Origin by Astar zkEVM?
Yoki Origins is Astar zkEVM’s launch campaign where users are encouraged to complete quests and collect various NFTs produced by Astar and partner projects to become eligible for reward. There will be Astar Network’s original characters “Yokis” inspired by Japanese Yokais. It will be launched right after the zkEVM mainnet launch
Yoki’s from ‘Yo-Ports’ – interactive capsule machines supported by over 40 web3 projects, creators, and brands on the Astar zkEVM – and upgrade them further, with designs from popular artists, companies, and more
💡 Yokai: Astar’s main character is inspired by Japanese Yokai.
💡 Gochapan: Yo-ports, a capsule toy machine.
How the Yoki Origin Campaign will work:
Complete the quests
This is the initial step to participate in the Aster zkEVM reward leaderboard. Users need to complete the Quests of the projects to play with with Project’s Yo-Port also known as Gachapan. Quests may include following the projects on social media and similar other quests.
Play with Project’s Yo-port & NFT
Completing quests unlocks playing with Yo-Port also known as Gachapan and receiving the project’s NFTs. Each project has its own “Yo-Port”, a capsule toy machine. From this machine, users can obtain the project’s original NFTs.
Collect the OMA
The next step is to collect the OMA tokens. Together with projects’ NFTs, users also obtain “OMA” tokens. This OMA token can be used to hatch Yokis from the capsule. By spending more OMA tokens, the Yokis will also upgrade.
Upgrading Yokis
You need to upgrade Yokis by spending more OMA tokens. The more upgraded Yokis you have, the more points you are likely to have.
Collect Points:
The more points you accumulate by owning more upgraded Yokis, the better rank you have in the leaderboard system.
Astar Reward:
As mentioned by the Astar zkEVM team, users will be eligible for the reward but they chose not to disclose the type of reward users will receive.
Official Quests of Astar zkEVM on Intract
Intract is officially collaborating with Astar zkEVM to host the quests, starting from March 6, 2024, on Intract’s platform.
These Quests are designed to earn you more points in the Astar reward leaderboard. This is also a golden opportunity to enhance your on-chain reputation on Astar zkEVM Layer2. Questers have the opportunity to complete quests and increase their chance of reward from their ecosystem projects as well. Quest on Intract will kick off on March 6, 2024.

How to bridge on Astar zkEVM(Astar zkevm Bridge Guide)
Step 1: Visit this URL.
Step 2: Choose the wallet you want to connect.
Step 3: Click on Network and switch to Astar zkEVM, or allow MetaMask to switch to the Astar zkEVM network for you.
Step 4: Click on the Bridge from the left nav bar. Ensure Ethereum is selected as the Bridge source, and Astar zkEVM is selected as the destination. After you have entered the amount of ETH to transfer, press the “Bridge” button.
Step-5: Once you click on the bridge and confirm the transaction from your Metamask wallet, it will take approximately 5-10 minutes for the Astar Portal and MetaMask to update your balance on the portal.
Step 6: Check your transaction in the “Recent History” tab. Your successful transaction will look like this.
