“The crypto industry is ever-changing, making it both exciting and unpredictable. Our investment thesis remains strong—focusing on sustainable business models and products that attract mass adoption, whether games, apps, or middleware. With infrastructure now solid on networks like Solana and Base, our focus shifts to applications that bring users on-chain or enhance experiences for the existing crypto community. While adoption is crucial, there’s also great potential in refining user experience for crypto-native users. Overall, we prioritize powerful, sustainable applications that drive growth, whether for new entrants or seasoned traders, investors, and collectors.”

Carl Vogel from (6th Man Ventures):

“Blockchains have found product-market fit in trading, aligning with our thesis on the financialization of everything. Sports, social media, and information markets like Polymarket are engaging users through financial markets, while Pump dot Fund thrives on meme coins. Opinion markets let people trade on beliefs, fostering engagement and trust. Social trading is shifting to a multiplayer experience, and on-chain sports betting is expanding markets. The financialization of everything dominated 2024 and will continue winning in 2025”.

“Blockchain and AI are a natural fit. At SmartXR, we’ve explored this space since 2021, but it gained traction after ChatGPT’s rise in 2023. Blockchain offers security and verification for AI-generated content, while crypto enables AI agents to transact”.

The space is maturing, with AI transforming gaming, trading, and DeFi, enhancing user experience and interaction. AI agents have shown Web3’s potential in a fun, engaging way. We remain bullish on crypto and AI, and at Monix, we’re closely tracking its evolution.

Carl Vogel from (6th Man Ventures):

“99% of crypto and AI projects probably shouldn’t exist. Building in crypto is hard—there’s less liquidity and capital than in Web2. The key question is: why use crypto at all? It only makes sense when it offers something Web2 can’t, like aligning incentives across communities. Crypto has proven useful in narrow API layers, such as compute (Jensen, IONet, Akash) and data sourcing (Grass), and also makes sense for payments. However, general-purpose decentralized AI frameworks have mostly failed to deliver value. As generative AI floods the world with infinite content, blockchain can provide a shared ledger to verify authenticity, a space with real potential”.

“The concept of users owning their data is amazing in theory, offering a fairer internet, potential revenue sharing, and easier data management. But in practice, it's unrealistic due to platform restrictions, device limitations, data aggregation issues, and other technological challenges. Privacy is also not an exciting topic for most users—while geeks and advanced users might care, casual users don’t prioritize data ownership. Unless the industry makes data ownership more appealing, it will be hard to drive adoption. The key issue is that data ownership lacks clear financial benefits. While the concept is great, without an attractive user experience, there’s no clear short-term solution”.

Carl Vogel from (6th Man Ventures):

“People have already given up their rights to their data, unknowingly signing it away whenever they use an app. While businesses handling sensitive data have reasons to prioritize privacy—such as compliance requirements or protecting proprietary information—this isn’t an urgent concern for the average consumer. Unless the impact of data privacy is directly visible, like how ad blockers improve the user experience, most people don’t see a strong reason to care or pay for it.”

How have the criteria for evaluating Web3 companies and projects for investment evolved across market cycles?

“The one fundamental thing that remains the same across cycles is the founding team's background and motivation. At pre-seed and seed stages, the biggest factors are the founders' background, motivation, understanding of the problem, execution plan, and flexibility to adapt to changing metas or cycles. While some factors may shift depending on the cycle, the core principles remain unchanged: the team's background, execution ability, and motivation”.


Naman(Big Brain Holdings)

“From 2016 to 2018, crypto was a philosophical space where people invested in its broader benefits. By 2020-2021, during the Layer 1 ICO boom, the focus shifted to projects with unique innovations and faster scaling, though the technology was still evolving. Today, investing is far more complex, considering the team, technology, PMF, and revenue, as crypto now touches many aspects of society”.

Sanat(Dragonfly)

“Crypto founders today are generally better but less "crazy." In 2015-2017, founders were highly skilled but unconventional, while now many come from top universities, drawn by financial opportunities. This shift has increased engineering talent but made it harder to find truly radical thinkers. As crypto attracts prestige-driven individuals, balancing competence with visionary, unconventional founders has become more challenging”.

Besides Crypto AI, what other sectors are you actively exploring for investment or future growth?

“A couple of sectors that excite me are payments, DePIN, and gaming. While stablecoins are a product of payments, the real opportunity lies in payment solutions, especially in emerging countries with struggling currencies. DePIN is broad, but interesting use cases, like ownership of health data, are emerging. Gaming, despite not yielding the best returns yet, has a massive consumer base and strong potential for future innovation”.

Naman(Big Brain Holdings)

“I think DeFi is underrated. While stablecoin adoption has grown globally, it's mostly centered around USDC and USDT. There's plenty of room for innovation, especially in a DeFi-native way, with projects like M0 and liquidity layers that better integrate stablecoins into the broader DeFi ecosystem, enhancing liquidity across protocols”.

Sanat(Dragonfly)

“I have two thoughts. First, frontends are an overlooked opportunity—Telegram bots alone generated $750 million in revenue, showing how lucrative a simple 1% vig model can be. Second, despite claims that L1s, exchanges, and stablecoins are fading, history shows otherwise. Every major crypto outcome has been an L1, L2, exchange, or stablecoin. In 2021, many said the L1 premium was dead, yet Solana hit new highs, and Sui became highly valuable. These areas may be crowded, but winning in them brings massive rewards”.

“AI is still in its early stages, much like L1s, L2s, exchanges, and stablecoins in crypto. There's massive room for innovation. One exciting area is small specialized models—like LinkedIn’s AI hiring agent, which used multiple specialized models instead of one large LLM. Open-source specialized agents are also likely to grow. Another key area is contribution attribution, where platforms like Bagel are making strides. AI agents will become more sophisticated, eventually enabling agent-to-agent commerce, creating vast opportunities for value transfer and utility. Overall, AI remains a vast white space with endless possibilities”.

Naman(Big Brain Holdings)

“I disagree on a few points. Value accrues to users and compute, not the model layer, which is racing to zero unless it captures users. OpenAI makes money from ChatGPT, not just the model. The agent space is overhyped—we won't see millions of multi-agent systems. Yes, they’ll simplify DeFi and bridging, but it's a limited market. AI is subjective, not objective. Design agents need human input, which comes from tooling. AI-enabled applications in crypto are underrated. Autonomous agents won’t replace humans entirely; the human aspect remains crucial for value, even with AGI in the next 5–7 years”.

Sanat (Dragonfly)

“I struggle to invest in Crypto x AI—it’s a sea of bullshit. Much of the occupied space doesn’t make sense. Decentralized compute is a nothing burger, decentralized inference is inefficient, and ZKML’s extra compute cost is unwanted. Smart people saw that crypto, a retail-driven market, wanted AI tokens and capitalized on it. As VCs with a 4-year cycle, very few products make sense. I’m interested in AI agents with money—Fasa was a cool social experiment. We’ve made one Crypto x AI investment, haven't announced it yet, and found everything else lacking. We could be wrong, but that’s how we feel now”.

Ultimately, while the market is evolving rapidly, success still comes down to building real, valuable products rather than just chasing trends.

Early Web3 founders were bold risk-takers, pushing innovation with unconventional ideas. Today, many come from prestigious institutions, bringing strong execution skills but fewer disruptive visions. While technical talent has improved, the space may lack the outlier thinkers who once drove major breakthroughs. Balancing technical expertise with visionary thinking is key to spotting the next game-changers.

“Investing in early-stage teams with valuations around 5-10 million, with a strong emphasis on evaluating their intentions and long-term commitment. Prioritizing founding teams that include highly skilled technical members, ensuring at least one founder has strong product and technical expertise. Recognizing that while some teams succeed purely through marketing and community-building, the focus remains on those with real technical capabilities. Long-term vision is a key factor in investment decisions, avoiding teams that seek quick financial gains or short-term optimizations. Engaging in multiple discussions with founders to deeply understand their mindset, motivations, and strategic direction. Rejecting deals that promote immediate liquidity with no lockups, ensuring alignment with sustainable growth and innovation within the industry”.

Gurnoor Singh Narula (Placeholder VC):

“Bull markets bring good vibes, new entrants, and active builders. Venture capital evaluates companies on a five to seven-year timescale, despite the industry's cyclical nature. Investors seek companies with a technical advantage to attract users or unlock new market sectors for long-term sustainability. In hyped-up markets, valuations are often inflated, requiring careful balancing when making investment decisions. Investors must be more critical in bull markets, considering not only technical expertise and product legitimacy but also price sensitivity and sustainability. The same investing principles apply in bear markets, but bull markets demand extra caution regarding valuation and long-term support. Bull markets also shift towards a risk-off attitude, making venture capitalists more careful in their bets while ensuring sustainability”.

“Ton Ventures leverages Telegram as a key distribution channel, with a focus on Telegram-based products like games, SocialFi (e.g., Cabal Town), and financial products using Telegram Stars ("StarFi"). DeFi and DeFi infrastructure on TON remain compelling, as TON's DeFi ecosystem is in its early stages. BTCFi, bringing utility to Bitcoin, is also exciting. Skepticism surrounds AI agents, but niche AI-related products, especially Telegram bots for Web3, have potential..

Gurnoor Singh Narula (Placeholder VC):

“The focus is on infrastructure research across ecosystems, investing in foundational layers and ancillary services, believing ecosystems retain most value as markets mature.

Recent work examines sequencing protocols, fee mechanisms, and value capture in the transaction supply chain, questioning how long extractive models persist and when users demand value redistribution. There's also interest in Ethereum, Solana, and others for scalability and interoperability”.

Role of privacy and data in the evolution of AI:

Inal Kardan (Partner at Ton Ventures):

“Telegram prioritizes privacy by advocating for minimal or no data collection. If a product can function without collecting data, it should avoid doing so, and any necessary processing should happen on-device rather than on a backend. Most users do not care about privacy, allowing AI startups to collect extensive data, which is a bad practice. Investments are focused on teams that minimize data collection, like Grably in the Ton ecosystem, which processes data locally and only shares aggregated insights. Since data misuse is inevitable, the approach is to avoid collection, minimize it when necessary, and prioritize on-device processing”.

Gurnoor Singh Narula (Placeholder VC):

“There are a couple of dynamics to consider, grouped into verifiability and shared private state. On verifiability, if agents belong on-chain for payments or records, blockchain scaling must be faster, with many L1s and L2s planning to switch to zk-technology. On shared private state, proprietary third-party providers may white-label AI agents, leading to commoditization and user data dilemmas. Most users will accept data sharing, but user data should be centered on the user. For both user-agent and enterprise-agent interactions, a private shared state should allow computation, making this space worth exploring long-term”.

What’s One Trend in Web3 That Everyone Is Overlooking?

Nick aka Tracecrypto from Standard Crypto:
"I think the biggest trend right now is all the AI agent stuff and AI coins, but one that’s underrated is the interesting activity on Forecaster. They’ve got this new app store integrated into the Warpcast interface, where you can play around with little DeFi apps and crypto minigames built directly into the social media platform. It’s one of the coolest experiments in crypto social, with a lot of smart builders involved—but not enough people are paying attention to it."

John G. from Outlier VC:
"Instead of looking at everything thematically, like DeFi, DePIN, or RWAs, we should view all of this as part of the future of the Internet, unified by an agentic layer. The web as we know it is going away—we call it the thin web. People are shifting away from typing into browsers and will interact more with agents. This agentic layer, powered by blockchain and AI, is what enables all these once-separate verticals to converge into a seamless ecosystem."

Naman Kapasi from Big Brain Holdings:
"Honestly, I think one of the biggest things people are overlooking is DeFi in general, especially regulated DeFi. With better regulation, there’s room for KYC DeFi to live on-chain for efficiency purposes, even if it’s not entirely about decentralization.

Another overlooked area is DeSci. Projects in this space are tackling groundbreaking challenges, like curing cancer with AI or replicating chemical reactions using latent compute. Within a couple of years, I think we’ll see these use cases really blossom."

Advice for Web3 Founders

Nick aka Tracecrypto from Standard Crypto:
"One underrated sign of a good founder is being well-calibrated about what aspects of their business matter most for the protocol’s success. For instance, if a founder building a new L2 spends all their pitch time talking about their programming language or virtual machine, even if it’s great, it’s worrisome if they don’t address other key factors like hiring or go-to-market strategy.

We look for founders who understand the balance between tech, go-to-market, and team construction—those who don’t overrate or underrate any aspect. That holistic understanding is critical for success."

John (Outlier VC):
"The most important factor is whether the founders are coachable. At this stage, when hard times hit, do they have the humility to recognize what they don’t know, accept feedback, and adapt? Or do they put their heads down and ignore the signals? Flexibility and resiliency are absolutely key."

Naman (Big Brain Holdings):
"We look for founders who are genuinely committed to making their vision work and are stubborn—but not blindly so. They should deeply understand their industry and what they’re building.

A red flag is founders who chase trends and change their focus every week. It’s important to stick with what you believe in and push through, even if others doubt you. That’s how many crypto AI projects succeeded—they stuck with their vision when no one else believed in the vertical."

Abhishek from Polygon Ventures “Bear market valuations are much better, but the number of high quality deals I would say could be lower in bear markets because just people are more enthusiastic to start companies in a bull market. Another thing that happens in the bull market that affects capital flow or like I would say the capital flow is cascading your LPs in a bull market when quantitative easing is happening are giving more money to VCs and then VCs have bigger pockets to deploy.”

Sanat from Dragonfly “I think thematically we as a fund are always excited by stablecoins. We're significant investors in both Athena and Agora, both of which are doing super well on the infrastructure side. I think the trend that I'm paying a lot of attention to is just like the growth of Solana has led to a lot of development in high performance chains and it feels like more and more users want low latency, high quality UX experiences”

Rapolas from Zee prime Capital, “It seems like the most successful ideas that are actually being having recognition and the ideas that are being used are all coming from the founders who did it in the open market and didn't go the VC route, didn't raise big rounds and then waited two years to launch a token”

Roland from Mechanism Capital, “You also have the AI agents which essentially went from zero to a couple hundred million or a billion dollar plus valuation recently. The biggest misses, at least for me in the last, let's say month or two would have definitely been all of the AI agents which are extremely hard to catch on the VC side. I've looked at maybe, I don't know, a lot tens, maybe 100 AI agent protocols”

Sanat from Dragonfly, “I think payments, especially AI payments, is something that is interesting because there used to be a saying that if you want to make a billion dollar company, build a product that will impact a billion users. And I think in the next 10 years we'll have a lot more AI agents than people in the world”

Proof of Uniqueness:

• Metrics: Verification through KYC on platforms like Binance, Coinbase, or OKX, Worldcoin verification and holding a “human” role in Analog’s Discord.

• Rationale: Getting a KYCed account is tough and expensive. It’s one of the most conventional ways to verify identity, but it comes at the cost of privacy.

• Medallions Available: KYC-verification can get you a Human medallion, while other unique metrics may earn you a Cyborg.

Proof of Rewards:

• Metrics: Eligibility for airdrops from platforms like Linea, Arbitrum, zkSync, Uniswap, or Optimism.

Right now, PoH solutions are too siloed to work across the broader Web3 space. If a PoH solution only works with certain dApps or chains, its utility is limited from the start. Compatibility has to be the default, not an afterthought.

3. Collect the OMA

4. Upgrading Yokis

You need to upgrade Yokis by spending more OMA tokens. The more upgraded Yokis you have, the more points you are likely to have.
